Columbus Day - 2021-10-11

What is Columbus Day?
Are you a history buff? Do historical dates and events fascinate you? The history surrounding Columbus Day is fraught with tales of brutality and deception. History books credit Christopher Columbus with discovering America on October 12th, 1492.
This, however, is not true. Christopher Columbus was not the first person to arrive in America. That title belonged to Leith Erikson, a Viking explorer who came to America in 1000AD... Columbus went on to explore and colonize North America as we know it today.
Many Americans do not celebrate Columbus Day because of his actions against the Native Americans. For those who do, you can share on social media using #ColumbusDay. Learn more about the history of Columbus Day by visiting a museum.
When is Columbus Day?
Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October to mark the anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in America on October 12th, 1492. This year we celebrate the day on October 11th.
History of Columbus Day
Colorado was the first state to celebrate Columbus Day in 1906. It is, however, no longer celebrated because of the brutality Christopher Columbus showed towards the Native Americans when he arrived in the “New World.”
