The first crossword puzzles were simple word games derived from word squares. Letters were arranged in a square so the words read the same across and down. These were published in children’s books and other publications. The inventor of the game of crosswords was journalist Arthur Wynne. He is known for creating what might be called the first published crossword puzzle. The puzzle appeared in the New York World newspaper on December 21, 1913.
