On October 16, Department Store Day is an opportunity to think about how department stores have changed your life. Department stores have been around for a long time. In the early 19th century, they were a place for the new middle class to shop. Department stores were often the first to offer something new. They often combined services with style and convenience. Many department stores had lunch counters where shoppers could eat and rest. In the past, the art of merchandising and sales was paramount. In those days, the stores were magnificent, with large clocks, brass, and statuary. The customer’s satisfaction was key. Some departments fill entire floors: floor to ceiling, there are escalators and plush seating. These days, many people are choosing to buy their products online using mobile devices. This is why so many shopping centers are now offering free wi-fi and charging stations to encourage shoppers to come in. Customers also like being able to search and compare products online before they visit a store. Then, they can test out the products in person and have someone explain the details of what they're buying.
