Mudd Day - 2021-12-20
What is Mudd Day?
Samuel Alexander Mudd Sr. was an American physician who was imprisoned for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Mudd worked as a doctor and tobacco farmer in Southern Maryland. Mudd was arrested on April 26th. A military commission found him guilty of aiding and conspiring to murder Lincoln and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Mudd escaped the death penalty by a single vote. In 1869, former president Andrew Johnson pardoned Dr. Samuel Mudd for his involvement in the Lincoln assassination. Though family members and others tried to have Mudd’s conviction overturned, it was never reversed. Mudd’s record has never been expunged.
