Once, ingredients like olives and oranges were hard to find. They were considered luxurious and exotic. Even the vegetable salad was a rare treat that was only served on holidays or other special occasions. It became known as “ambrosia” after the food of the Greek and Roman gods. A delicious fruit salad, called ambrosia, is popular in the Southern United States. Ambrosia has a variety of ingredients, including canned or fresh pineapple, canned or fresh orange slices, miniature marshmallows, and coconut. Originally A classic ambrosia salad consists of canned mandarin oranges, pineapple, and maraschino cherries, along with fresh grapes.

We celebrate National Ambrosia Day annually on December the 12th.
