Before 1943, anyone wanting to write a letter or scribble notes on a piece of paper had to use a fountain pen or pencil. The invention of the ballpoint pen allowed people to do so without the use of paper. Ballpoint pens are becoming more prevalent in the world. They are even used as promotional tools by advertisers wanting to reach out to consumers.

National Ballpoint Pen Day is observed on June 10th.
