Almonds and good luck are in the air on April 9, National Chinese Almond Cookie Day. The golden cookie, sometimes with special designs and, other times, plain, delivers scrumptiousness in its crunch and almond flavors. These delicious treats are traditionally made during Chinese New Year as they are believed to bring good luck to households. It's traditional to press moon cake dough into a mold. But you can also make your own designs on the cookie. This tradition is said to have begun in China, but there are no mentions of it before the 1800s or 1900s. Chinese almond cookies have a long and confusing history. Some say that they were invented in the 16th century by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty. At first, they were a royal dish, but as years went by, the recipe was released to the public and everyone fell in love with them.
