What Is National Coast Guard Day?

National Coast Guard Day celebrates and honors the brave men and women who make up the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is a branch of the military that function similarly to the US Navy, except they work all the time and not just during war time. The Coast Guard operates under the Department of Homeland Security, working to keep United States waters clear and safe, but can be taken over at any time by the Navy.

The United States Coast Guard was founded by Congress on August 4th, 1970. It was first comprised of 10 vessels.
