National Creme de Menthe Day - 2021-09-15
What is National Creme de Menthe Day?
On September 15th, go ahead and take advantage of National Crème de Menthe Day. Whether you're having a cocktail or dessert, remember to use this classic ingredient. Many liqueurs we enjoy today started out as tonics and cure-alls. Pharmacists made them a reality. Crème de menthe is a great liqueur. French pharmacist, Emile Giffard, studied the digestion and cooling properties of mint. He created a recipe for crème de menthe. The color of crème de menthe is green, but it is white when extracted. This is why I prefer the colorless variety. If you're doing a recipe that doesn't require the green color, then you should use white crème de menthe instead. The usual way to make mint liqueur involves steeping dried mint leaves in alcohol for several weeks. This creates a natural green color. To remove the mint leaves, you filter the mixture and then add sugar.
