What is National Drinking Straw Day?
Marvin Stone, the man who created the modern-day drinking straw with his 1888 patent was deeply religious. He wanted to make water bottles more hygienic by creating a way for people’s teeth to come in contactless often while they drink from them. Stone owned a paper cigarette holder company, which surely helped lead to his invention of the straw. Once he had tested well with local drinking establishments Stone upgraded his technique by wrapping manila paper in tubes and coating them with paraffin wax before rolling it up into sturdy little rounds called “straws”- an idea patented on January 3rd, 1888 two years later when more people were buying these than ever! In 1906 the machine was invented that could roll out these strong reusable devices instead of being hand-rolled all over again -an event is known simply as 'The Turning Point'.
