The good news is some superheroes wear business attire, not capes. They are the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) professionals. On October 26th, National Financial Crime Fighter Day, we recognize these people and their work to protect the United States economy. Although they may not wear capes, they are the financial superheroes who keep us safe. During the 1960s, the drug trade was booming. Wealthy criminals from around the world were sending illicit and illegal money into the United States. The money was funding more criminal activity, including human trafficking and drug smuggling. On September 11, 2001, the United States suffered a terrible terrorist attack. The terrorists who carried out these attacks were financed by criminals and money launderers. In response to this tragedy, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act, which cemented the role of anti-money laundering professionals. This act reinforced the Banking Secrecy Act, which was passed in 1970 to provide better AML efforts. Today is National Financial Crime Fighter Day, a special day that honors bank security professionals and anti-money laundering experts. These dedicated people are responsible for protecting the financial system and thwarting criminal activity. This is an excellent opportunity to show them your support and appreciation.
