The strip detailed the life of Garfield, his owner Jon, and his fellow pet, Odie the dog. The strip now holds the world record for most widely syndicated comic strip.

National Garfield The Cat Day was first celebrated in 1998 on the 20th anniversary of the comic strip and Garfield’s birthday. The day was formally proclaimed by Wanda Thayer, member of the Boca Raton City Council.
