Although the name may sound like a German word, the cake did not originate from Germany. Its roots can be traced back to an American company that made dark baking chocolate. In 1957, a German Chocolate Cake recipe appeared in the Dallas Morning Star. It became very popular. The original name was German 's Chocolate Cake.

On June 11th, we celebrate National German Chocolate Cake Day.
