March 25th is National Medal of Honor Day. This day is dedicated to honoring war heroes who saved others at great personal risk.
On March 25, 1863, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor to six members of “Andrews Raiders” for their bravery during a Civil War raid.
The Medal of Honor was originally created in 1861. It is the highest military honor of the United States of America, awarded by the President in the name of Congress for deeds above and beyond the call of duty. There are three versions of the Medal of Honor. One for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force. Personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receive the Navy version.
Since the medal was created, 3,468 soldiers have earned the Medal of Honor.
