National Newspaper Carrier Day - 2021-09-04
What is National Newspaper Carrier Day?
On September 4th, the United States celebrates National Newspaper Carrier Day. These people get up before dawn to deliver newspapers before most Americans get out of bed. It's a tough, thankless job that deserves recognition. A lot has changed since the first newspaper carrier. The young people delivering the news have become more diverse, but they still deliver the news. The first newspaper carriers were enterprising young immigrants who made their living by selling newspapers. They've changed over time, but their history is still relevant today. The first paperboy in the United States was hired in 1833. The New York Sun’s editor, Benjamin Day, advertised for a “steady man” with good character to deliver newspapers. However, he was so impressed by 10-year-old Barney Flaherty’s enthusiasm that he gave him the job.
