National Peace Rose Day - 2022-04-29
What is National Peace Rose Day?
On April 29th, we honor National Peace Rose Day. This day is set aside to honor the “Peace” rose. It is a hybrid tea rose that is hardy, vigorous and highly resistant to disease. The light yellow to large cream-colored flowers of the Peace Rose have slightly flushed crimson pink petal edges. This rose is well known for its peace-filled scent and its ability to easily grow in any garden. Francis Meilland, a French horticulturist, developed the Peace Rose between 1935 and 1939. The rose was created to promote world peace, so when he saw France's impending invasion, he sent cuttings to his friends around the world so it could be preserved. He sent the last cutting to the United States before France fell. After World War II ended, the rose was reintroduced as a symbol of peace. A rose received many different names when it traveled the world. In France, it was named after the breeder’s mother. In Italy, it was called Joy. In Germany, the name of the rose was Gloria Dei, or Glory of God. And in the United States, it was called Peace.
