Hymen Lipman , who was granted the first patent for attaching an eraser to the end of a pencil in 1858. Before that, there were separate erasers and pencils. Lipman made two tools more convenient to use by combining them. He also manufactured envelopes for his stationery shop, to which he was the first to add adhesive to.
