Pfeffernüsse are small spice cookies popular as a holiday treat with Germans, and ethnic Mennonites in North America. Similar cookies are made in Denmark, and The Netherlands. Pfeffernusse translates to “pepper nuts” because of its round shape and unusual ingredient, black pepper. These cookies are a German tradition that can be found in many homes this holiday season. Pfeffernüsse cookies are a traditional Christmas cookie in Germany. Made with molasses, pepper, anise and other seasonal spices, these cookies are chewy and coated in confectioners' sugar.
