History of National Pie Day
Pie came to America with the first English settlers. The early colonists cooked their pies in long, narrow pans and called them "coffins" because they reminded people of England's burial rituals as well as giving a sense that this dish was not meant for consumption but served largely decorative purposes only (like many other food items from those times). It wasn't until during American Revolution when crust took on its current meaning - referring specifically to what kind you're going eat: A top or bottom-crust pie?
