Misting produce is a trick that all supermarkets and grocery stores use to increase the lifespan of their fresh fruits and vegetables. Automatic misters were first created in 1979. Before this, store owners would place wet sacks over their fruit and vegetables at night to keep them looking plump and fresh. National Produce Misting Day was created to celebrate the invention of this engineering marvel.

Founded by the Carrigan Corporation of America in 2018, National Produce Misting Day was created to celebrate Jack Carrigan who created the first patents for the automatic misters used today.
