On an American Thanksgiving table, it would be hard to find strained, spiced, and twice-cooked squash custard without its typical orange-crusted crust. One of the earliest foods the first European explorers brought back from the New World was pumpkins, which were cultivated in Central America around 5,500 B.C.They were among the first foods brought back by European explorers from the New World. The Gentlewoman's Companion, a 1675 book by Hannah Woolley, contains recipes for pumpkin pies dating back to the seventeenth century. American cookbooks began to publish pumpkin pie recipes a century later.

Pumpkin Pie Day celebrates pumpkin pie on December 25th annually.
