Have you ever heard of spumoni? You can't be blamed if you haven't. This traditional Italian dessert made its way to the US from Italy in 1904, by baker Salvatore Lezza and his wife. It is made with three layers of flavoured gelato, and includes candied fruits. The original recipe called for an almond flavoured gelato, a chocolate flavoured, and a vanilla with chunks of chocolate. In the United States, a spumoni usually includes a cherry layer with candied cherries, pistachio, and chocolate. Some others may include strawberry, pineapple, or even hazelnut. The dessert is served in slices that highlight the beautiful fruit-and-nut stuffed layers and it will be a perfect conversation starter at your next dinner party.
