A waffle is a grilled breakfast pastry that is shaped like a grid from the iron that it is made in. It is served usually with butter and syrup but can also have other, more elaborate toppings like whipped cream or ice cream. And none of this would be possible without the invention of our beloved waffle iron, without which we would not have waffles. If you ever needed an excuse to eat waffles for all three meals, this is it. If sweet isn’t your thing, you could even try out some recipes for savoury waffles!
The first patent of the waffle iron was in 1869 by Cornelius Swarthout. The first electric waffle iron became available to the genet=ral public in 1918. However, we do not know the origins of this specific national day.
