The watermelon is a large fruit comprised of a super thick skin and a soft, sweet inner. It is 92% water, hence the name, but not actually a melon. Early watermelons are thought to have been bitter and bland, which means that ancient civilisations specifically bred the watermelon to become the sweet and tender fruit that we know today. Watermelons can grow extremely large, and choosing the perfect one is something of a unique skill that not many possess.

National Watermelon Day on August 3rd honors arguably the best summer fruit available.
