In Europe, Saint Nicholas is known as a bringer of gifts and this day is celebrated on December 5. This feast day is also observed in America and Canada, where it has taken on the name of “Santa Claus” and is celebrated on December 25. In Europe, Germany and Poland traditionally had boys dressed as bishops to beg for the poor. In Ukraine and Poland, children waited for St. Nicholas who would leave presents if they were good that year. Children who misbehaved may expect to find a stick or piece of coal under their pillow.
