In the 1930s, a new clown character called “Weary Willie” was created by Emmett Kelly. This clown persona featured a hobo in appearance and attire and was based on the common hobos in America at that time. Early in his career, Kelly worked as a cartoonist. He created the Weary Willie character when he was young, and it became popular in newspapers. After working at various jobs around the circus, he eventually became a clown for Ringling Brothers Circus. Kelly’s talent went beyond a convincing performance as a down-and-out sad sack. He perfected a famous routine in which he tried to sweep up a spotlight only to be startled by its reappearance.

Weary Willie Day is celebrated on December 9th!
